How to Stay on Top of Your Mental Health and Wellbeing

Zalina Wälchli

Studies suggest that one out of four people suffer from mental issues at least once in their life. Yet so many people still choose to not talk about it fearing to get frowned upon by society. This problem is so commonplace that many famous personalities including Mariah Carrey, Carrie Fisher among others have come out to be victims of mental disorders. The problem is we often get so busy taking care of our physical bodies that our mental well-being takes a back seat. In this article, we have discussed a few ways in which you can stay on top of your mental health.

 Stay physically active

It’s a known fact that exercising regularly can bring you a host of health benefits. But did you know your mental state is also influenced by your physical health? Exercising helps you cope with tension, anxiety, improves mood, boosts energy levels and promotes restful sleep. Hence, incorporate a 30 minutes or hour long workout in your daily routine. It could be any activity that you enjoy doing so next time when you feel burned out, consider taking a walk outside or going swimming.

Socialize

Make an effort to socialize with people and develop strong bonds whenever you can. Spending time with the people you vibe with makes you feel cherished and loved. You can reach out to these people when in distress and find solace in their presence. Take out time to plan a movie night with a friend or someone you have not connected with in a while. Even if you can’t meet them in person, always try to stay in touch through video calls, and social media.

Do something that makes you happy

Set aside time to do things that make you happy. Develop a new hobby or participate in an activity that helps you stay engaged. Doing so will not just increase your focus, but it will also boost your self-esteem as you’ll be proud of accepting challenges and learning something you knew nothing about.

Manage stress

Stress is a part of our lives which is usually inevitable. However, with a bit of perseverance you can easily manage it. List out the situations or people that causes you tension or anxiety. Now either develop a strategy to deal with that particular event or learn how to avoid the face off. You must know any event or problem can’t be life defining so it makes no sense to keep worrying about it. When in stress, consider talking to a friend, or do something that you enjoy such as watching a comedy show, walk in nature, or painting or listening to soothing music.

Limit the intake of alcohol and cigarettes

Excessive drinking in tandem with smoking can have adverse effects on the mental well-being of a person. If you consume drugs, things get even worse. It’s easier for people to feel anxious, depressed and tired who consume alcohol and smoke cigarettes or do drugs as compared to the ones who don’t. Studies have shown that if these substances are consumed for prolonged periods, mental problems including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can arise.

Give back

Research shows that helping others has a positive impact on a person’s self-esteem. When you do something for others, you feel part of a community and a sense of pride which is very important for your mental health. Start by volunteering for a cause you believe in, helping a co-worker or friend in distress.

Develop gratitude

“One of the best ways to cultivate gratitude is to establish a daily practice in which you remind yourself of the gifts, grace, benefits, and good things you enjoy. One of the best ways to do this is keeping a daily journal in which you record the blessings you are grateful for. When we are grateful, we affirm that a source of goodness exists in our lives. By writing each day, we magnify and expand upon these sources of goodness.” Instead of complaining about the things you don’t have, be grateful for the things you have. Counting your blessings will make you appreciate the things you have been overlooking for so long, and in turn bring you happiness and peace of mind. Practice gratitude and you’ll notice an overall improvement in your mental well-being.

Get a sound sleep

Sleeping for at least 8-10 hours everyday is of utmost importance for maintaining mental health. A sleep deprived person is bound to feel anxiety, fatigue and irritation. Hence try to go to bed early, turn off your computer or mobile phone screens at least an hour ago plus don’t consume caffeine after 5 pm.

Learn to forgive

We have a lot of people around us who have hurt us or who do not resonate with our feelings and opinions, thereby causing us stress and grief. But can stressing over something change what has already happened? No. Then why do we keep punishing ourselves and risk our mental well-being? Think about it. Forgive the people who have done wrong to you and move on.

Seek help

Don’t hesitate to reach out for help when you feel overwhelmed, anxious or frustrated. Speak to someone you have faith on – parents, a friend, partner or co-worker. If you need counselling, don’t shy away from contacting an expert. The earlier you seek help, the better!

So there you have it- tips to stay mentally fit and healthy. So next time you feel depressed or anxious, try out the tips given above and you will feel a lot better!

Sincerely,
